In April 2015 Joel from Red Guava invited me to create a hanging sculpture for the light-well of their East Richmond office. The brief was to create an object that dampened the sound and diffused the light so that the Red Guava team could work without constant glare and echos.
I had been keen to work on something a bit more graphic than my usual work, so a brief for a software developer seemed pretty enticing. Source code from 'Cliniko', Red Guava's leading product, provided the basis for the felt lattice. Industrial felt is often used to dampening sound in an industrial setting and has a lovely weight to it but it risks being overly warm and oppressive on a scale this large. The latticework not only allows airflow but plays beautifully with the light in the space. The work is constantly changing throughout the day and gently swings with the overhead fans.
